Carol S. Weisman is Distinguished Professor of Public Health Sciences and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, with a joint appointment in the Department of Health Policy and Administration in the College of Health and Human Development. Previously, she was Professor of Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, where she was the founding Director of the Interdepartmental Concentration in Reproductive and Women's Health, and Professor and Associate Chair of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.
Dr. Weisman is a sociologist and health services researcher with a principal interest in women's health care and policy. Her research focuses on improving access and quality in women's primary care and on how health risks affect women's health. Currently she directs the Central Pennsylvania Center of Excellence for Research on Pregnancy Outcomes, a four-year $4.7 million project to reduce disparities in adverse pregnancy outcomes by improving women's preconceptional health. This project focuses on a diverse population, with special emphasis on rural areas. Recently completed projects include coordinating the national evaluation of the quality of primary care in the National Centers of Excellence in Women's Health program of the Department of Health and Human Services; developing the Primary Care Satisfaction Survey for Women; and studying contraceptive counseling for adult women in managed care plans.
Dr. Weisman is Editor of the journal Women's Health Issues, the peer-reviewed journal of the Jacobs Institute of Women's Health, and she serves on the Institute's Board of Governors. She co-chairs the Women's Health Measurement Advisory Panel of the National Committee for Quality Assurance and serves on the Pfizer Women's Health Advisory Board and the Steering Committee for the Women's Health Research Coalition of the Society for Women's Health Research. Dr. Weisman is the author of over 100 publications, including Women's Health Care: Activist Traditions and Institutional Change (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1998).
Dr. Weisman received her B.A. from Wellesley College with a major in Sociology and Anthropology and her Ph.D. in Social Relations (sociology) from the Johns Hopkins University. |
